What requirements do I need to comply with when prescribing Medicinal Cannabis?
In order to prescribe Medicinal Cannabis, prescribers must ensure that they have approval from both the TGA and their State Health Authority (where required). TGA Approval may be obtained either through Approved Clinical Trials, the Authorised Prescriber Scheme or the Special Access Scheme. Using the SAS online system , applications to the TGA and State or Territory Health Department are submitted simultaneously.
In QLD, a state approval form is no longer required.
Please note: While PharmaPrograms makes every effort to ensure the MCP is up to date we also recommend that you familiarise yourself with the requirements applicable to your state/territory.
Where can I find more information about Medicinal Cannabis?
The TGA provides current Clinical Guidance Documents to assist health care professionals and patients prescribed medicinal cannabis. The documents are overviews of medicinal cannabis clinical trials across five indications: Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Nausea and Vomiting, Pain and Palliation.
The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) has developed a series of webinars to assist with understanding cannabis medicines. Please note that some of this information is specific to prescribing in NSW.
As the field of Medicinal Cannabis is frequently changing it is important to regularly review the regulatory requirements via the Department of Health website for your state/territory:
